Overview
Silverfish are primitive, wingless insects covered in silvery scales. They are nocturnal and avoid light. While they do not pose health risks, they can damage books, wallpaper, and stored items by feeding on starch and cellulose.
How to Identify
- Elongated, carrot-shaped body
- Silvery-gray metallic scales
- Three long tail filaments (cerci)
- Long antennae
- Fish-like wiggling movement
- No wings
Behavior
Silverfish are nocturnal and extremely fast-moving. They avoid light and are often only seen when disturbing their hiding places. They can survive for months without food.
Habitat
Prefer dark, damp areas with high humidity. Common in bathrooms, basements, attics, and closets. Hide in cracks, behind baseboards, and in storage boxes.
Diet
Feed on starch and cellulose including book bindings, wallpaper paste, paper, photos, clothing (especially starched items), and stored cereals.
Reproduction
Females lay 1-3 eggs per day in cracks and crevices. Development from egg to adult takes 3-4 months. Can live 2-8 years, longer than most insects.
Distribution in the Southern U.S.
Common throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mississippi in both residential and commercial buildings.
Regional Notes
High humidity in Southern states provides ideal conditions. Air conditioning can help reduce indoor humidity and silverfish populations.
Signs of Infestation
